Christian Ed

The mission of Christian Education at Lincoln Park Church is to:

  • Change lives by inviting and encouraging all ages of LP members to participate in a life-long journey of learning the essentials of the Scriptures and the Christian faith.
  • Challenge members to connect their faith to their daily lives.
Involve members in sharing God’s love by serving Him through outreach and mission ministries in the larger church and world communities.
  • Provide safe, quality, Christian relationships and environments for all the church’s teaching/educational ministries.
  • Initiate and present fellowship and learning events that support the church’s mission of seeking and sharing Christ.

Sunday Church School Continues its Walk in the Park of Faith

Be a learning, growing Christian. Find meaning and prayerful support in our high-speed culture by joining LP’s ongoing Sunday Church School and its Walk in the Park of Faith. Come and bring your children to begin their journeys too!

Each Sunday offers opportunities for all ages to hear and explore the biblical message and learn how to apply it in our harried world.

At 9:45 AM, after the Children’s Message at Contemporary Worship, LP’s younger children enjoy LIVE B.I.G.: activities designed for learning to live and believe in God, while adults gather in the Library for Lectionary Bible Study.

At 11 AM, children ages 3 through 6th grade, use the Methodist curriculum ROCK SOLID; youth are currently using Adam Hamilton’s resource, When Christians Get It Wrong, Adults can choose between:

  • Stone Soup, in Rm 103, for a time of reflection and service, making meals once a month for those in need,
  • or a video series in Memorial Hall focusing on the Easter message. Ideas for new topics and classes — as well as offers to teach and lead — are always welcome; bring your ideas to Pastor Dorris.

Sunday and midweek Christian Education classes and other special educational and fellowship events seek to nurture the spiritual growth of all children, youth and adults in Lincoln Park’s church family. Enthusiastic, caring leaders would love to see you and family in attendance.

LP’s Sunday morning learning schedule includes a Live B.I.G. mini-lesson, scripturally-based activity and Music & Movement experience, “Joyful Noise,” for 3 year olds through 3rd graders following the Children’s Message at the 9:30 Contemporary Service. The children may return to join parents or go to snack time upon completion of this activity; upper elementary aged children are encouraged to attend worship with their families throughout this service or on occasion as assistants with the younger children’s session. Also from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. an Adult Lectionary Bible Study Class uses Cokesbury’s KEEPING HOLY TIME to focus discussion on a three year disciplined reading and study of the major stories and themes of the Old and New Testaments; this group is led by Bob Robertson and meets in the Church Library.

Sunday morning Church School for ages 3 through 6th grades uses the United Methodist Cokesbury curriculum, ROCK SOLID at 11:00 a.m. Preschoolers (ages 3, 4, 5) meet in Room 101; Middlers (Grades 1, 2, 3) meet in Room 104; Juniors (Grades 4, 5, 6) meet in Room 102. Junior High and Senior High Youth (grades 7-12) meet in the Youth Room and use Cokesbury’s BL4Y curriculum to explore the biblical and Christian connections in living a life of faith as a youth today. Two adult options are also offered at this 11:00 a.m. time period — resources from the WESLEY MINISTRY NETWORD are used by Facilitator, Earl Hope, in Memorial Hall to stimulate discussion and search for understanding and application of the Christian message to our daily lives and issues within our culture. The second option is STONE SOUP & CONTEMPLATION, based on the Upper Room devotional readings and led by Loreen Miller and Becky Chadwick in Room 103; on 4th Sundays this group also cooks meals for those in need.

The Christian Education Committee and Children’s Ministry Teams encourage Christian fellowship, spiritual growth and service by offering periodic intergenerational and family gatherings, Vacation Church School, overnights, and varied summer/seasonal outings and programs, often in cooperation with other Ministry Committees such as Nurture & Witnesses’ Summer Movie on the Lawn. Service opportunities and outreach projects challenge church school children, youth and adults to witness to their faith beyond and outside the church walls; these possibilities have included the local Soup Kitchen ministry in Reading, Souper Bowl collections, Berks Women in Crisis Children’s Shelter, Operation Christmas Child, school supplies for children in Kabul, the Salvation Army’s Family Center, medical mission trips, Haiti earthquake relief, Nothing But Nets, shut-in cards and gift remembrances and supper at the Opportunity House Homeless Shelter. Please call the church office or check the Special Events page of this site for listings and information on current events and service opportunities.

Leadership, teaching and involvement opportunities to support these learning and serving initiatives are many and varied. Resources, individual support and workshops for training are offered and readily available locally and nationally.
